This international relations course explores the two main theoretical approaches to world peace and how they aim to achieve international security. We also examine important events of the 20th century that shaped the political and security landscape of the modern world.‘Human security’ is a comprehensive approach to security that shifts the focus from the state to the security and wellbeing of individuals and communities. We lay out the key components of human security and the challenges in ensuring human safety and security. We trace the factors contributing to interstate conflicts and terrorism and describe the far-reaching consequences of such disputes in terms of global stability. The course then studies the risks associated with the spread of nuclear weapons and explains how their spread can be controlled.We designed this course for anyone interested in global politics and the complex landscape of security challenges. Prerequisite knowledge and expertise are optional to take this course.
